Ink made from a Pt/C catalyst is sprayed onto the surface of the proton exchange membrane to create a catalytic layer. When hydrogen comes into contact with this layer, an electrochemical reaction occurs, producing hydrogen ions and electrons. The hydrogen ions pass through the proton membrane and combine with oxygen to form water, while the electrons flow through an external circuit, generating an electrical current.
